If there's just one beauty tip you must learn from my blog, let it be this: Wear sunscreen daily.

If there’s just one thing I want you to learn from my lifestyle blog’s Beauty section, it’s this: You have to wear sunscreen all over, everyday (not just when you’re at the beach!), to protect your skin from the damage caused by UV rays—think not just painful, peeling sunburn but also ugly signs of aging.

I know a lot of people find it such a chore to apply sunscreen on their face and body, but trust me, you’ll thank me and other sunscreen advocates by the time you hit your 40s and 50s and your face looks younger than your years and your skin is dark spot-free—or at least, there aren’t as many as there should be—among other benefits.

Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. You’ve heard this so many times, but when it comes to skin aging (and skin cancer), prevention is better than cure, and the best way to do that is to avoid the sun (especially from 10AM to 2PM) and make sure you are protected from its harmful rays by religiously applying sunscreen with a Broad Spectrum SPF value of 15 or higher. You should also wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses whenever out in the sun, as much as possible.

Sunscreen Supergoop Ultra Screen

I know with all the things you need to do to look presentable each day (shower, style your hair, apply skincare, do your makeup, pick your outfit), adding an extra step of applying sunscreen all over (face and body) can be such a hassle, but actually, it doesn’t have to be. The application process can take less than a minute and actually be an enjoyable, refreshing experience when you use a sunscreen mist like Doctor T’s Supergoop! It comes in different variants, but the one I love is Supergoop! SPF 30 Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C (P1,100, available in Beauty Bar). It’s clinically-tested and does not have any of those suspicious, harmful chemicals like paraben, petrochemicals, phthalates, and oxybenzone.

It has a twist-lock cap so it’s spill-free when you pack it in your luggage or carryall bag to the beach! It’s so easy to apply, and it has a light, fresh scent that guys will not shy away from using (my boyfriend lets me spray him all over whenever we are together, in my effort to get him on a sun protection habit). It goes on like an aerosol spray that goes on evenly with a light press on the applicator. You can also spread it more evenly with your hands, but when you’re in a rush, you don’t even have to.

The best part? It goes on invisible! It has a dry oil feel and gives a subtle sheen, but it’s not greasy and even has a sort of cooling effect when the particles land on your skin. And yes, you can spray it on wet or dry skin. Just apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure. It’s water-resistant for 80 minutes, so make sure to reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying, or at least every two hours when exposed to sunlight.

There’s also an SPF 30+ variant with a high-output turbo sprayer that allows a broader range of application of the lightweight, water-resistant sunscreen lotion mist on your face and body (P1,350 in Beauty Bar).

If you think over a thousand bucks is too much to pay for sunscreen, another cheaper alternative I like is Ultra Screen MD Face & Body Sunblock Face and Body Spray SPF 70 with broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection (P285, available in Watsons). It’s formulated by dermatologists and comes in an absorbent, lightweight, waterproof, and sweatproof spray-on formula for ultra sun protection.

TIP: Sunscreen products, like all cosmetics, expire after some time; most are only good for two years. Check the label for the expiration date, or at least the manufacturing date so you can count two years from there. Toss when the date has come.
