Lately, I’ve been complaining, whether mentally or verbally, that I’ve gained weight. So two weeks before I was due to fly to where my boyfriend lives (yes, LDR), I decided to do something about it.

Dr. Claudine Roura invited me, along with other bloggers, to try two weight-loss treatments at Contours Body Design Studio, an aesthetic center that offers various non-surgical weight loss treatments.

Dr. Roura wanted us to try services that no one else offers in the country. One of them is Laser Fit (P5,500 per session), a non-invasive full-body Zerona cold laser exposure to melt fat combined with exercise. It’s great for people who already have a regular workout regimen since Zerona cold laser reportedly increases the fat-melting abilities of the body.

Each painless session takes around 40 minutes. You lie on your back for 20 minutes while the low-level Zerona cold laser works on your waist, hips, and thighs, then you turn over so the laser will be trained on the back of these areas for another 20 minutes. I did the procedure three times in two weeks, the recommended minimum number of sessions. This treatment is followed by a 10-minute power workout (following a workout video and supervised by a therapist) and another 10 to 20 minutes in a vibra-machine called Waki Fit Massage, on which you stand, do squats, push-ups, planks, and bends while the machine makes your whole body vibrate, loosening the fat.

Another treatment Dr. Roura made us try is Acutrim (P4,000 per session), another non-surgical approach to accelerate weight loss. This no-needle acupuncture technique (which works for me, as I hate needles) combines cold laser with micro-current stimulator to stimulate specific acupuncture points in the ears and body to suppress appetite, control hunger pangs, make you feel fuller with less food, and speed up metabolism. It lasts for around another 40 minutes.

Contours recommends four weekly Acutrim sessions to reinforce treatments. The last session will extend the effects for another four to six weeks. Acutrim is not designed to be a stand alone treatment. It’s meant to enhance your current diet and exercise program.

Promo rate: Avail of the P14,000 Laser Fit package, which includes four sessions of Acutrim, counseling, weight loss pamphlet, and a DVD guide.

My program

Each person would have a customized program based on his or her weight-loss needs. I did six sessions of Laser Fit (three per week for two weeks) with the 10-minute workout and 20 minutes on the Waki Fit Massage to melt, burn, and flush out the fat, and four sessions of Acutrim (weekly for three consecutive weeks, then the last session after a month) to maintain effects.

Tip: If you’ll do both Laser Fit and Acutrim in one visit, make sure to set aside at least two to three hours. Also set aside more time on your first visit, second to the last visit, and last visit after a month (for Acutrim) for the therapists to measure your inch-loss and weight-loss.

Laser Fit

I immediately felt the effects of the workout all over my body after my first Laser Fit session. My whole body was sore from the workout, and it was a good kind of soreness—the kind that tells you the program is working. If there’s any side effect, it’s probably that I’m always so thirsty.

I was after all reminded to hydrate often, and to avoid coffee and alcohol, which will dehydrate me. If I can’t, I can only take a maximum of one cup of coffee and one glass of red wine per day. I still took my one cup of coffee per day and occasional one glass of wine, which probably explains why I was dehydrated. Even my dad noticed that I was drinking so much water—at least that’s a good thing.

After my second Laser Fit session, I felt slimmer, with less fat on my thighs and legs, and my stomach felt smaller. I also felt stronger, which I was able to put to the test when I played badminton with the family and did yoga, because of the cardio and muscle toning. The therapist told me that doing yoga besides the workout that comes with the program is actually recommended. They really encourage clients to work out more.

I was impressed, I definitely lost my appetite after the first session. And good thing it worked because the treatment isn’t exactly painless, I must warn you. At the very least, it is uncomfortable. After the first session I had to remind myself to eat whenever acid kicked in and my stomach grumbled, as I didn’t feel hunger pangs. It did take out my cravings, but once I ate, that’s when I’d realize I’m hungry.

After three to four days, I felt my appetite returning, but I still didn’t need to eat as much. The treatment made me feel full with less food. However, I must admit it’s not powerful enough to curb my really strong period cravings, which I got after my second Acutrim session.

After completing six sessions of Laser Fit and three sessions of Acutrim, I noticed that my clothes were looser and I looked and felt slimmer, my face included. People actually noticed, and I would always get asked how I did it; now I can tell you in full detail. Note that along with these treatments, I also did yoga at least twice a week and wore my Slendertone Abs every morning.

I lost a total of 5.4 inches all over my body, mostly around my waist and hips. In terms of weight, it’s not as drastic, as I only lost 2lbs, but this is probably because I also developed muscle mass from all the cardio and weight training. I went from size 26-27 to size 24 jeans—from the same brand where I usually shop—in two weeks.

This program is great if you’re rushing to lose weight and make your workout take effect faster, perhaps for an upcoming beach trip, wedding, or any other special occasion where you need to look and feel your best in clothes. It also helps jumpstart your weight-loss and fitness program, which you can just maintain long after you’ve completed the treatments.

Note: The weight and fat can come back if you don’t maintain it, so you still have to watch what you eat and exercise regularly. Staying fit requires work.
